Our Story
“When my daughter with Down syndrome was 11 months old, Joanne Bumbacco (who is the mother of an older child with Down syndrome), invited me to go to the Canadian Down syndrome, conference in Toronto.
While there we learned all encompassing research regarding people with Down syndrome from health to education. When we returned home, we were determined to advocate for our children to have the best education and opportunities in our community.
At this point, all children with down syndrome were segregated in the education and daycare settings.
Phyllis Howell, who worked for Infant Development, was instrumental in helping us to organize and form a chapter of Down syndrome society in Sault Ste. Marie. Phyllis had access to families who had children with Down syndrome to see if they wanted to become involved in a parent support group.”

Our Governing Board
Lisa Ouellette, Treasurer/Secretary
Lisa is a devoted mother to a young adult daughter with Down syndrome. She utilized her exceptional financial skills to serve as the group’s treasurer for years. Lisa firmly believes in fostering independence and providing her daughter with diverse experiences to help her discover her skills and abilities.
Sheena Smith, President
Sheena is a dedicated parent volunteer who became actively involved when her son was young to connect with and learn from other parents. She has contributed to events, fundraising, and raising awareness, firmly believing that teaching children early enriches their lives later.
Jill Burdeniuk, Vice President
Jill, a dedicated mother to a young daughter, got involved to assist however she can. She is an active member, willing to help wherever needed, whether it’s representing children’s interests on the local school board or organizing family events.
